Manage Private Server in the Cloud

Hi,

I am looking into a managed cloud server solution. Is there someone willing to explain differences. Do you know any good articles on this subject?
How do you feel about 100% uptime vs 99.9% uptime(I read somewhere that this translates into 40 minutes of downtime per month)

How about having multiple VMs running at the same time: one for an exchange server(examples?), one for a billing server, one for hosting

You need to provide a little more information in regards to what you are asking...

Explain what differences? The difference between cloud/grid and traditional hosting?

Cloud hosting is basically the host splitting things up so you have a mail server, database server, web server (sometimes load balanced/clustered). Basically everything is split among several servers. Granted I am over simplifying things, but the basics are just everything is spread among several servers.

In theory this method eliminates downtime, granted like uptime it’s all subject to the conditions. If you read the fine print most of the time uptime only covers unscheduled downtime, so scheduled downtime could be longer...

Cloud/Grid hosting is shared hosting, so keep in mind all the same limits apply. VPS Servers (VMs) on the other hand are a totally different bread as everything’s on the same system with dedicated resources. You can also do far more with a VPS server than a cloud based server.

If you are looking to resell hosting I would suggest a VPS server over a cloud server as you have more control over things, if you are just looking for a place to store personal sites then cloud servers can be fine.
