To let you know an rough experiment I’ve done recently
Platform: double xeon 2.8G, 2G memory, 73G scsi / windows server 2003 /Apache2.0/PHP 5.2/MySQL 5.1/Modx 0.9.6.3

So optimization rule no 1: export to static html whenever possbile!
Gzip requires some cpu time and in my case didn’t increase the server throughput, but it cuts down the file size a lot(from 24k to 7k) and when tested from a remote client does have a significant impact on performance( from 9.5 pages/sec to 16.5 pages/sec)
APC is very useful but unstable with Modx (I will try it later)
Write your js code optimally and use Minify will definitely help too

As for cutting down the load time, I’ve seen some posts in the forum on hacking Modx core (e.g, remove entries from site cache), those methods will definitely help if you want to push you Modx site to the limit
