Remote access

Hello,

Just wondering what is the Modx community using to access their computers remotely.
I used to use LogMeIn but there might be better solutions.

I like LogMeIn because it’s browser based and all you need is an addon to your browser.

I avoid this functionality because of security reasons... how I solve the problem is by using Dropbox. I can save all my important documents to my Dropbox folder, and the app copies that folder’s contents to a network space somewhere. I can then turn on my laptop, and it will download any updates from my network Dropbox space. It’s completely eliminated my need to login to my desktop computer while working remotely.

Why would there be a security issues if you have a good password?
The connection should be encrypted anyway.

There might be some bugs that can be exploited but this is true for every tool or OS you use.

It really depends on your needs and such. Solutions such as Logmein are great if you need access to the computer in question and I use it frequently to work on friend’s computers. The security risk Everett might be thinking of is open ports which is present with Remote Desktop, but this isn’t present with LMI.

While I maintain the LMI client on my notebooks I typically leave it off unless needed and rely on dropbox. I just came home today and didn’t bring my notebook with me as all my files are on dropbox and automatically follow me home

Anyways it’s a question of needs... If you don’t need access to the machine then consider an option like dropbox to make a folder of key files sharable online.

Any time you have an open port on a box, you have to contend with hacks on that port. A strong password is no guarantee you won’t get hacked; it’ll just take longer. A better system would involve dedicated firewall rules, disabling of password logins entirely in favor of public/private keys, etc. Just like you say, every OS can be exploited.

I’m just saying that security isn’t a destination... it’s a process. I’ve seen a number of systems hacked when users erroneously thought they were secure. It’s good to be paranoid; if you don’t need a service, disable it.

For me, I just concluded that for what I needed, it wasn’t worth the headaches to open a port for remote logins when I could achieve what I needed using Dropbox. Your needs may be completely different.

I totals agree with the security issues.

AFAIK LogMeIn doesn’t need an extra opened port in your router and you need to login twice in order to have access to the system.
