I just had an idea. For those of us who build websites for a fee, why don’t we include a line item into our invoices...
$10 Donation to support the MODx project (because MODx is free!)
Another approach would be to write a paragraph that explains how much money you save them by using MODx (both in the fact that it is free and also the fact that you can build to their exact requirements more quickly), and ask them how much the would like to donate to the project? $10 $25 $50 $100 Other ______
I think that most people who have a site built in MODx wouldn’t mind at all paying a little for the great software they get to use (they have to pay $10 a year for a domain name--$10 once for a CMS is a great deal). But there is nothing motivating (or educating) them to take the time to to make a donation. This would make it easy for them to contribute, and gives a way for us webworkers to contribute to the project by facilitating donations.
