I am pretty sure that there is still a huge market for direct name domains.. job.com is most likely worth a lot! I have a friend who bought a domain ages ago for his wife’s business but they never used it. last week he received an offer for it and called me to ask my opinion. after we talked he then called the buyer and made what we considered an insane offer and they accepted it almost immediately... should have asked for more and negotiated a commission for myself shocked
    boo hoo...how could u?

For the most part, I’d say they’re not worth it, but it really depends on the sector and whether you’ve got a strong brand name already.

For example, the DIY chain store B&Q has the domain name diy.com. In my opinion, this is a bit nuts, because they have such a strong brand name already, and no one would think to type on diy.com to find that store.

On the other hand, if you were starting a new web design company and webdesign.com was available, that might make sense. Although, again, it doesn’t really give you the chance to brand yourself so strongly.

From my point of view, using the company name is far better.

My opinion is combining the niche with area such as mcguirefinancial.ca (area-mcguire + niche-finance). This makes website attract traffic from both directions.
        • Or like mine... I've been "sottwell" for nearly 20 years in various networking media, so sottwell.com was a natural, at least for me.

And of course, modx.com. It was modxcms.com, but they managed to get whoever was holding modx.com to part with it. I have no idea how much, and I doubt that I'll ever know. Every now and then I do get curious though, snoop that I am.

I used to work for an Internet startup shopping comparison site called "DealTime", dealtime.com. Then they bought shopping.com, I'm not sure if that was before or after they got bought out by EBay. I heard they paid a million dollars for the shopping.com domain name.
