301 redirect to modx site

If I had a server that didn’t meet even the most basic requirements and I couldn’t modify its settings, I would switch to another server.

I totally agree. Unfortunately the company the site was done for do not have the option of changing server as their IT is managed by another company its a nightmare.

I have a load of articles which I have removed but which are now showing up in the error log as 404 errors. Obviously this is not good for SEO so my question is whether there is an easy way to redirect them in for example .htaccess? I have tried using regular redirect 301 syntax without any joy, is there some trick I’m missing?

Could you just delete the index.html file? Then the index.php file would load by default. If your MODx 404 page is set to be the site root, then any requests for index.html will roll over to index.php anyway....
