How do I match MySQL client and server versions?

Hi people!

I know this is not a MODx issue but it has been driving me nuts the last couple of weeks. I have googled but haven’t come up with a solution. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction or offer a solution.

Here’s the issue:

phpMyAdmin is giving me warnings that "Your PHP MySQL library version 5.0.51a (client) differs from your MySQL server version 5.1.30". In addition, the PHP MySQL library 5.0.51a is known to contain a lot of bugs. Here lies my problem; how can I match the client and server versions of MySQL? Since the client version of MySQL that I have is known to be problematic, it is of no use to change the server version of MySQL to match it. The change has to be the other way round.

On the other hand, if a mismatch of client and server versions of MySQL is not an issue, how can I change MySQL library used by PHP to a more stable version? i.e. prior or post 5.0.51.

My search results seem to be pointing to "you will have to compile your own php". It would be nice to avoid this route and find a pre-compiled version.

I am on a windows xp machine. Apache, MySQL and PHP are installed separately on the machine (i.e. no XAMPP or similar install).

Are you running off a webhost or your own server? Also, are you running Linux?

I probably don’t know any better than you on how to accomplish this, but maybe I can help search with this extra info.

This is running on my pc; OS = Windows XP.

This is why on XP I always used the XAMPP packages (I think I have 14 versions of it installed side-by-side on my neglected XP box), as everything is compiled to work together. Otherwise, compiling them may be your only choice. Thankfully I switched to a Mac last spring and have now discovered MacPorts where I can easily install various combinations of all kinds of software that works together. Until this, I had been using MAMP and feeling similarly constrained, always searching for binaries that matched the versions of Apache/MySQL/PHP in my MAMP configuration and never being able to test the latest and greatest releases.

I used to use XAMPP and WAMP at some point. I abandoned WAMP when they took forever to upgrade their packages to the latest releases. In addition, last time I used it, WAMP had the buggy MySQL 5.0.51a (client). The latest release uses PHP 5.3 though (with mysqlnd) and MySQL 5.1.36.
