I have been looking all over the internet for a cms that works with subdomains and have found many but either work with full mods, plugins, or htaccess work arounds. All this seems a little overkill for me. This is what I want to do. I am needing to build a site that has some main content information and each state will have its own contnent that is different but will still be located on the same domain and share information, almost like a sub folder but working on its own domain. For example, a site like insurance.com has many subdomains with different products but all pages are tied and relevant to the main domain other than the content added to the subdomain per state, so basically, the subdomain is used to add pages. So insurance.com gives you many options, like auto, home, business and if you select auto, it will take you to auto.insurance.com and if you choose a state, it will take you to lets say texas.auto.insurance.com. There will be different content on insurance.com/full-coverage/full-coverage.php than on texas.auto.insurance.com/full-coverage/full-coverage.php. But at the same time, other content is shared. Is there a version of Modx that will allow for subdomain content without mods to apache etc, a simple process?

    I found this link

    http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/revolution/Creating+a+Subdomain+from+a+Folder+using+Virtual+Hosts

But really, it should be as easy as assigning a page and naming the subdomain as the main url, but it is not.. or am I missing something in one of Modx’s versions?

The SVN turorial is pretty much all you need. But this is only available on MODx Revolutions which is currently in Beta5, its finally realease before the soon-to-come more stable RC1.

If you follow the steps correctly, you should get a sub domain created in less than 10 minutes. For an open source CMS, this is pretty sick.

Tom, Adding smileys to giant bold text doesn’t make it sound friendly. Its like screaming at the top of your lungs with a smile on your face.

In any event, you can do subdomains if you know what you are doing with .htaccess and mod_rewrite on apache. Subdomains are simple in Revo but adding such function out of the box to Evolution is unlikely. If someone wants to write a tutorial on how you can do subdomains in a single install of Evo, please do so.

@TomMLS For this format ’http://domain.com/subdomain’, it should be easily acccomplished with the ’Friendly Alias Path’ configuration setting (assuming you have friendly URLs enabled)
