The new whitehouse.gov site is one of the best information sites ive seen in regards to big footers.
All of the links can be seen in the top nav via the rollover. But they are also well laid out in the footer. The search was hard to find, but the top/bottom menu recurrence is nice.
that is a good example. The footer is where you find he breadcrumbs and the open site map. That is handy.

I happen to like it honestly, and it adds value in my mind. Shows what the site owner considers important ... sort of a "metadirectory" of his personal preferences if you will.

I have always thought that big footers is just a way to try to get better SEO
For example, the White House site, the big footer is just "opening" the top menu at the bottom, exactly the same information.
I always wonder if the browsers wont tag that as duplicate content.
The David Walsh site puts the "open" menu at the bottom, and don’t even bothered placing a menu at the top.
Horrible for accessibility both for screen readers and for regular users, you have to scroll to go somewhere...

I think most of walsh’s readers come there from dzone, rss or the like. So most of the time we go to the site just to read one small article- maybe see a demo then are off.
So top nav would be clutter i think.
