character issue

Hi, not sure if this is the correct board.
I am having problems correctly displaying characters.
The best example is Antonín Leopold Dvořák.
His name gets displayed with little rectangles, question marks and the likes.
In phpmyadmin all seems to be okay, just the pages diplay it different.
Now there is the "stuff" in the header of my page:



And I can assign a collation to the database/table/field, plus set one in MODX. Plus use field type of VARCHAR or TEXT. As we say in Dutch I dont see the forest through the trees. Translated, I am lost here. How can I make sure that Mr Dvořák ’s name gets diplayed with all the accents?

Well first, since you are telling the browsers that you are serving utf-8 content, your database needs to use a collation that begins with utf8_ (i.e. utf8_general_ci or utf8_unicode_ci, etc.). In fact, your database needs to be created with the proper collation before you even install MODx or you will likely get the MySQL default of latin1_swedish_ci which is not a utf8 compatible encoding, and all of the tables will be created with the wrong collation. At that point you would have to manually alter every text/varchar column in your database to change to a utf8_ collation successfully; just altering the database container is not enough.

SO in the future just use the modx default latin1_swedish_ci would suffice?
Would that display r with tilde (Dvořák ) correct?
