some newbie css help regarding backgrounds

when designing a contact form using css I have an issue with the label background to appear in all the height of the containing <li>
since the textarea is higher than the label itself.

does someone knows the correct way to achive that?

Not quite sure what you mean... I find that adding colored borders to the elements on a page that’s not behaving the way that I expect helps me to figure it out easier. At least that will make it clear where your label and list elements begin and end.

Try
#myFormID {}
#myFormID ul li label { ... }

or

just

#myFormID label { ... }

and give your form or form container a id="myFormID"

I’ve attached a screen of what I want to do.
the top part is a table with background applies to <td>’s and the later is my css.

hope this makes it easier to understand me.

So if I understand this correctly, you’d want to apply the right background color to the <li> elements and the left color to <label>, and then you probably also need to give your labels a height of 100% so they’ll fill out the vertical space.

Zap the thing is, I see now, is that only if I declare the height of the <li> as specific pixel it works. If I don’t declare the height, or give it something like 100% OR auto the title background stays with the title text.
I could set each li a class of its own but if this doesn’t meant to be this way I would hope

Personally I would probably just use the old trick of putting a 1px tall background image behind everything with both colors and repeat y.
