Parallels + MAMP for localhost testing

For those who use  VMware Fusion, when you run your modx site in the local server using MAMP (and Pro), are you able to check the site in IE via VMware Fusion?  It’s suppose to work for Parallels, but I cannot get it working at all.

It does work in Parallels + MAMP:

Use your favourite text editor to open this file:  /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache/httpd.conf

Add  this to the bottom of the page:


And save.

Now, assuming your running Leopard, open /etc/hosts and add these lines to the bottom:


And save. Now restart MAMP, open up IE in parallels and point it to:
http://[your-computers-IP-number]:9001

(Find out your IP from System preferences > Network)

You’ll also be able to view it in Safari at:
http://mysite.site

Just increment your port number for the next site you develop, 9002, 9003 etc.

EDIT: forgot, you need to flush the hosts cache after editing the hosts file: Open terminal and run this:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache

With XP no problem but with Vista I get a pretty high load (but hey, what would you expect from MS )

I think it has, but I can’t tell how big the improvement is, the start up time for XP is very fast though. And the whole interface sort of blend into Mac, if it weren’t the ’Start’ icon on the left bottom and IE icons, one would really think he is still working from the Mac.

Hi, therebechips thank you so much for writing this tutorial!!!!! I did some googling last night, and was very happy I was not the only person who couldn’t get it working.

Anyhow, I found this and tried it, it works. Well, sort of because I could only see the homepage, and all images and style sheets links are broken, when I click on a link, it goes back to server name’s link. I was working on a Magento site, and am not sure if it’s because magento using absolute path therefor I must do something extra to make the links works. Haven’t have a chance to test on Modx site as I deleted the site during the upgrade of machine.

This is an old thread, but it’s the only one that came up when I wanted to test using IE in Parallels, with Modx in MAMP. So I thought I’d post...

I’m pretty much a newbie at this stuff, and I spent a few hours trying to get this approach to work. And it just wouldn’t.
I looked around for a simpler alternative, and eventually I found one:

In the Parallels virtual machine, go to Configure>Hardware>NetworkAdapter1.

Set this to:
Bridged Ethernet (instead of default Shared Networking)
Parallels Shared Networking Adapter

Now if you can view your Modx site in MAMP at:

http://localhost:8888/yoursite/ in Safari

all you need to do to view it in your virtual machine is replace localhost in this URL with the IP address of your Mac (which you can find by going to Preferences>Network and looking under, say, AirPort, if your Mac is connected to the internet via WiFi).
The IP address is usually something like: 192.168.0.5

So you can view site at:
http://192.168.0.5:8888/yoursite/ in IE in Parallels.
