Eclipse, PHPEclipse and SVN

Well, I’m diving in again, determined to get control over a serious development environment this time. So would anyone have an objection to my opening this thread, and using it to ask questions when I really get stuck, and can’t find answers on Google?

First off, can anybody give any recommendations as to which SVN plug-in I should use?

I’m having a blast working with the templates for the PHP context! It’s even got a template with a basic HTML head! I can edit it to be my usual basic MODx template starting HTML code! Not to mention templates for all the MODx tags (it already has templates for Smarty and phpdoc).

Now all I need to do is quit playing with it and learn how to work with it

I think it’s a wonderful idea for a thread since most developers will want to use Revolution with an IDE like this; and IMHO, this setup is the best one.

I use Subclipse for SVN.

I use PHPEclipse, Subclipse for SVN, Spket for JS, and Aptana for CSS/FTP.

I wouldn’t use anything else.

Ok, I’ve got the three set up (Eclipse, PHPEclipse, and Subclipse). Do I have to have a local subversion repository? As far as I can tell, I do, since Subclipse does not do network connections. So if I have a branch in the MODx svn repository, how do I synchronize my local repository with my remote branch?

You do not need a local subversion repository. Subclipse works fine on network connections... not sure where you are getting lost, but it’s just like an SVN client built into Eclipse...it just works along side things like Delete and Rename in the IDE to take approprite SVN actions. If you are working in a project that is checked out under SVN control, you can right click on any file or editor and select Team and you’ll see all the available SVN actions you want to take.

To checkout a remote project, right click in the project Explorer and select Import... Other -> Checkout Projects from SVN and follow the wizard...

I do personally because PHPEclipse is open source and you’ll never see features available in a commercial only version (whereas PDT will never have the features Zend is offering in it’s commercial IDE plugin for Eclipse). If I want a specific feature, I can help code it (since I have some Java experience) by contributing it myself; something that would be much more difficult with PDT.

I also like it because it is more flexible on type ahead and linking to sources; for instance in PHPEclipse, I can type in a PHP string and get type ahead for all the classes that are available in my current project (or any projects linked to the current project), but could not get that in PDT. In fact PDT required a lot more configuration to get any benefits from the type ahead in my experience.

There are some features in PDT that are nice and not in PHPEclipse as well, but in general, I find the PHPEclipse tools more usable in general. YMMV.

Thought I’d post here instead of starting a new similar thread.

My setup is Eclipse for PHP Developers and subclipse. I have managed to checkout evo and revo from the SVN and installed them fine. The "problem" I am having is when updating my local files with the latest files from modx SVN. Previously I used tortoise SVN and IIRC, it never used to overwrite the config.inc.php. However, with subclipse, it is overwriting the whole project folder and deleting the config.inc.php. In order to upgrade, I need to copy an older config file to the project folder. Is this normal subclipse behaviour or am I missing something?

My actions: right click on the remote repository folder, choose ->checkout. This brings up the wizard and I select "check out as a project in the workspace"..; I then select my local project location after which I get the "resources already exist.....will be deleted...proceed" - I click OK thinking the config.inc.php will be preserved since its normally created during installation....but no, subclipse deletes everything.

Any pointers appreciated. Thanks.

Once you do a checkout, all you need do is right click on the existing project and select Team --> Update to HEAD.

Seems my setup is wrong then? I don’t have that option of Team. Maybe I am in the wrong perspective. If by existing project, you are referring to the svn repository exploring perspective I see no such option ....

Sorry, my bad...I was in the wrong perspective should have been in the project explorer perspective. It works fine. Thanks.
