Arrrggghhh! Internet Explorer issues

Trying to get my website going http://www.5ep.co.uk

Yep, there’s a few layout issues I need to sort out. But the one I’m trying to fix at the moment that is driving me insane is trying to get an absolutely positioned div working correctly. I am referring to the div that contains the rest of the image for the camera background on the far right of the page.

In Firefox and Safari, fine. In Internet Explorer, both v6 and v7 it doesn’t even show at all!

I’ve tried looking up IE’s foibles, but I cannot find one that seems to apply to my situation. I can find references to "hasLayout" which I suspect has something to do with it, but I am not sure how to apply any solutions to my particular situation. Anyone got any ideas? My business partner is getting a bit impatient for me to get this thing up and running. Most other things I need to do with the site are straightforward. But this problem is confounding me!

Have you tried z-index?

Yeah, I’ve tried z-index, but without success. I’ve also tried removing the backgrounds from all the other divs and giving the problem div a bright red border to see if it was hiding somewhere, but it doesn’t show up at all anywhere.

I just can’t figure it out. I’ve used absolute positioned divs with IE before without problems.

This may be becase of the IE z-index bug. Try changing the surrounding div to relative or absolute or to none - can’t remember which one worked for me. Also, try a google search on "ie z-index bug".

Not to spoil the fun, but I think your transparent png’s (like the blue phone image) are also messed up in IE, thanks to an other infamous IE bug.

You might have a reason to not do this already. What about:
- remove #rightcolumnouter
- add the 80px to #rightcolumn
- combine the 2 camera images into one and make that the #rightcolumn background
- add margin-right 80px to #maincontentcontainer

Then you dont have to worry about the absolute positioning, and it saves you some html lines and only loads one image instead of 2.

Thanks guys. I’ll give these suggestions a go and report back on success or not.

This won’t be a problem in the final site as I haven’t optimised these to 256 colour alpha PNG’s yet, so they will degrade properly for IE when I’ve done that.
