I have a Flash-based image rotater that serves up the latest game news on the site. For broadband users, this isn’t a problem. But for dialup users, there’s likely going to be a problem there. wink

So does anyone know of a quick way to check if the user is on a 56k, and thus "hide" the Flash from them, while still showing it for the broadband users?

Why not a "skip" link or button so visitors can choose themselves to skip the Flash?

It’s not a intro thing like most are --- it’s a news "ticker".

Well I am not aware of anything which can detect if user is using a dialup because its not directly connecting to your site, he has ISP’s proxy etc. in the way.

I would make it optional for user, may be link "slow connection? click here to remove flash ticker"

          Just my 2 cents.

If you watch your stats you will notice that most all AOL clients go through a certain IP range at an AOL hub. It is in Raston.

Here are 2 from my statcounter

            Reston Virginia United States
            cache-dtc-ab13.proxy.aol.com (205.188.116.77)

            Reston Virginia United States
            cache-dtc-ah16.proxy.aol.com (205.188.117.208)

Not sure if this helps but it may, and maybe you can not detect all of them but perhaps you can set access for some. I think it would be way more work than what it would be worth though.
