Does Revolution have the ability to SET charset & collation during install?
Or does it merely detect & display?
If it DOES (have the ability to SET), what might it mean if you get an error when trying to change the setting (to something like utf8 & utf8_unicode_ci)?
I am having trouble installing REVO with anything except latin1 & latin1_swedish_ci, which seem to be the defaults.
I create my database with the MySQL module in cPanel.
I have a VPS with root access.
I know it can be done. I’d rather not go in and edit tables by hand. I want to set utf8 & unicode (or general) BEFORE ever installing REVO (or DURING). Before any tables get created.
If it matters, I’m using MySQL 5.0.87-Community, Linux CentOS 5.4, cPanel/WHM 11.25, REVO beta5, Apache 2.2.14, PHP 5.3.1.
The ’Collation’ setting at the bottom of the ’Operations’ page in phpMyAdmin does squat.
I have noticed that collation for Drupal6 is set to > utf8_general_ci (as per Tables-view in phpMyAdmin), which I did NOT set. So this tells me the application itself DOES have the ability to SET charset & collation during install.
What I would like, ultimately, is for when I click the ’Create Database’ button in the MySQL module in cPanel, it spits out a shiny new utf8 database (with either utf8_general_ci or utf8_unicode_ci collation).

Your MySQL user need permission to create database to set it with MODx installer, else
you need to create it manually and set it right.
utf8 general is IMO the best option.
Thanks.
Can you tell me how to:
a. permission to create database
b. create it manually
??

I am able to create the DATABASE fine.
I am able to create a USER with no problem.
I am able to assign the user all the appropriate permissions and give the user a password.
I am able to assign the user to the database.
My question is, does REVO have the ability during a new install to set charset & collation?
Has anyone done this?
I see the last option mentions setting database options (’Advanced Upgrade Install’), but is that only for an UPGRADE?
I want to set charset & collation BEFORE (or during) initial installation.
That guide talks about using Telnet. Nobody uses Telnet any more, cuz its security suks.
