Web based FTP.

Hey,

client has just called and asked what the chances are of adding some type of web based FTP so his clients can upload files etc to their servers.

Ideally I would like to use an external app, mainly because I don’t want lots and lots of "clients clients" getting at the manage files part of the cms.

Has anybody ever had to do something similar and if so, what did you use?

Not sure that’s what you’re looking for but maybe checkout Relay, it’s an "AJAX directory manager" but it has an upload progress bar (provided you have PERL installed).

Thanks as always for your help David. I’m not sure if they have perl, I will have to check. This looks like just the type of thing I need.

FTP with php is not that difficult. I have had used it before for uploading very large files. Take a look at the ftp functions available in ftp:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.ftp.php

Using a ready made gui will be easier but just thought I would point out that you could easily build a snippet to upload a file over ftp if needed.

Your clients could FTP via IE explorer without any other software.

In the past I had to shut down access to FTP on my servers because of user/password dictionary attacks. While I figured out what to do I usedNet2FTP: http://www.net2ftp.com/

Since then I’ve install Fail2Ban to stop the dictionary attacks, reopened native FTP access and left Net2FTP for those who don’t use an FTP client.

well yes you have to select 1 by 1, but there are java applet file managers that work as an ftp client. My problem I cant upload to any direct I want (I have to set 777 for the dir - but setting 777 to all dirs doesnt sound to good), so after I upload I have to move the file Thats only if I use an online file manager and my host doest have a file manager in the cp:(

Thank you all for your views. This is turning into an interesting thread indeed. I really like relay which David recommended. I have warned my client of the pitfalls of web-based FTP but they are adamant that it’s what they need.
