Has anyone used a Java PHP interpreter?

Hi,

I was just doing some reading on scalability, etc, and found this post.

They said using a Java implementation of PHP gave them a 4x improvement in performance for drupal. They used Caucho Resin.

I was wondering if anyone had used anything like this with modx and what kind of performance improvements they’d had, or what kind of issues they’d encountered.

Very interesting indeed. The only thing that strikes me off the bat as potentially problematic is the same issue he mentioned for Drupal:

The only downside we’ve seen so far: Configuration of rewrite rules is difficult, which means that clean URLs in Drupal will be problematic. We might need a Drupal bounty for this one.

I’ve not tried this, but am adding it to my to do list...

I use http://eaccelerator.net/ on my server. I did notice better performance immediately. but my site never has more than one person online at a time so no telling if it really helps! My server is an old dual Xeon on an i828 chipset with a single U160 fujitsu drive. - yes a single drive probably 10+ years old, but I backup daily to my 2tb raid5.

eAccelerator is a bit different, but definitely improves performance none-the-less. In fact, with the next major release of MODx, you will benefit even more from opcode-cache systems like eAccelerator. But I have to say, some of the promise I see in using the Java-embedded PHP interpreter goes way beyond op-code caching.

Looks like they’ve sorted out the mod_rewrite issues.
