When to paginate?

In the interest of making pages load faster, I decided to use pagination here http://sweetskies.fruitwerks.us/babies.php. I think it’s pretty neat but my wife had a fit. I explained how it decreased load times and kept people attentive. She said that the site loads fast enough anyway - well this is true. Then I explained that when you have the server on the LAN and not 2000 miles away it is going to be super fast. If you bothered to look at the page I had all 9 or 10 of the current babies listed without pagination, and on top of that another six that have already been sold. That would be about 130 KB of thumbnails + the code which can’t be much but still. I was viewing the page at 1024x768 and I don’t see how most people use that resolution, anyway three listings looked good to me. In relation to your personal experiences; would listing everything be overkill? How many babies should I list at once?

The loading speed is irrelevant IMO. If your visitors would like to see (all) your babies they will either have to click or scroll, but the same amount of bytes will have to be loaded. Scrolling perhaps has an edge over pagination because the content will be loaded immediately.

If you have your listings paginated however, you will probably save some bandwidth with incidental visitors, who land on your page by accident looking for human babies, puppies or other cuddly toys.

I am using a broadband connection at least 2000 miles away from you and your site loads really fast.
err...i *think* it must be more than 2000 miles but you don’t have an address listed. You only use postorder?

There is a user selectable pagination dropdown thing for the ditto, use it! ... I dont have the url handy, please search.

modxxx; yeah I have been told my site is slow, but I have loaded it via proxy overseas and it is totally tolerable. I host from my cable connection of 1mb up, the server is my firewall / DNS / NAT box - an old Dual Xeon 1.7 with 512 of rambus and a 19gb U160.. I am in Dallas.

Personally I like the pagination. I have noticed that IE is slow to render my pages, but FireFox zips them out. I need to explore mootools domready function. I think that will help the pages render faster.
