I just installed Xampp on my Windows computer and put Wordpress on it.
Question about Xampp: can I install multiple programs in Xampp? because I want to install Modx next.

Sure ... just install different applications in different directories.

OK, thanks, the Xampp site does not have much detailed info on how to use it.

If you did the default install of Xampp, each subdirectory under the htdocs directory is basically its own web site. So if you have htdocs/yoursite, directing your browser to http://localhost/yoursite will go that that site. You can put as many programs as you like in each one just as you would on a remote server.

Thanks Bob, I’m getting the hang of Xampp now and having a ball with it. What a great way to experiment without going live.

No doubt about it. The down side is that once you do go live, moving changes from your XAMPP test bed to the production server is a non-trivial task. This is especially true if you have other users making changes to the live site.
Hopefully, upcoming versions of MODx will make life easier for those of us who do it this way.

Ditto what BobRay said, as I have encountered problems developing on an XAMPP local setting and then deploying to a live server as sometimes the PHP or MySQL don’t quite match up with their versions. This can sometimes cause problems as everything seems ok locally, but once it goes live it usually requires some tweeking. But, I do love XAMPP as it really allows the flexibility to tweek the layout with CSS, get the snippets and plugins generally working right, and then it is usually just a few tweeks to the .htaccess or a few other files to finish it off.
