Whenever I’ve needed to split content into multiple columns, I’ve always ended up doing it in PHP instead of afterwards with JavaScript or CSS. It’s easy to create a snippet that parses your content text and returns two HTML columns instead of just one (I usually end up adding a splitter comment or some other manual marker, because it’s hard to measure the vertical height of a block of text by counting it’s characters). You could also just use the introtext or TVs to store individual columns of text, but I prefer it altogether (and that way it will automatically be indexed by search snippets and the like).
