One of my domain names is up for renewal and I’ve decided to move to a 3rd party registrar (GoDaddy) because of how much I dislike the host I registered it with. True, I should have never done it, but at the time I was naive and the host was great, offering a free domain name for 2 years. Well, now I’m stuck. GoDaddy says that if your domain is locked they can’t transfer it. So, who do I contact, the registrar (ENOM) or the administrative contact (Globat ... aaaah) to get it unlocked and an auth code sent? I’m in somewhat of a time crunch as it expires in a day... I know I left it to the last minute but I’ve been so busy with Ditto lately it slipped my mind.
If your host registered the domain name for you, they probably have the login info needed to unlock it for transfer. You could ask them to unlock it or to send you the info to do it yourself. I’ve learned the hard way that contacting the registrar to prove that I am the registered owner so that they will unlock the domain name for me even though I don’t have the login info is a Kafkaesque nightmare I never want to relive.
I’d go the safe way and renew the domain using your host. Then you can think about transfer it. You’ll end up paying one extra year ahead, but anyways, you don’t have time left to wait for the transfer to be completed.
As ZAP said, after starting the transfer on the GoDaddy side, you should contact your host about the unlock and the auth code.
Having your domain registered makes no difference. You can easily carry on with Godaddy. Meanwhile you can change the MX details of your website to point to a different hosting provider like networksolutions.com
Their MX settings are like : ns1.secureserver.net
ns2.secureserver.net
Networksolutions hosting service uses
ns1.worldnic.com ( something like this)
Just change the MX records and your hosting will be independant of Godaddy.com . They will have no control over your hosting.
