I did originally work from the List Apart article. And have other print pages working fine, it’s just this one site which has the problem.
I’ll keep at it and if it’s useful I’ll say what was going on if I get it sorted.

I’m curious as to why you’re trying to use JavaScript to switch to your print stylesheet. If you link to it with media="print" it will work in all browsers and with JS disabled. It sounds to me as if there’s a problem in your JavaScript (not your CSS) and that’s why the stylesheet is not switching properly.

I’m not using javascript for the print view now.
The problem I was having was that even though #menu {display:none;} was working fine for the screen but not for how the browser rendered the page for print, I needed to be very specific about the div inheritance eg. #wrap #menu {display:none;} instead of just #content ....
I’m sure most people will be aware of this but for some reason it completely left my brain when I was trying to get everything working.
