Basic PHP and MySQL tutoring

If you guys have no objections, I’ve seen several remarks about wanting to learn PHP and MySQL on this and other forums, and I’d like to have a sort of informal spot (this topic would be fine) for answering questions, pointing to resources, etc. I’ve taught everything from assembly language to C++ to creating a human resources database in QBasic online. (the last was a focusing of a general course in response to a request on the part of somebody who was about to lose his job because he insisted the company needed to spend money on a commercial product!). It was a lot of fun, and I have plenty of time, and would enjoy a bit of it again. Besides, the best way to learn something is to teach it. Students will always keep you stretched beyond your abilities!

Not necessary to make a separate forum, I don’t think. I just mean to answer questions, point to links to resources to answer questions I can’t (plenty of those!) I remember how hard it was for me in the beginning, trying to teach myself when nobody wanted to bother. The shop where I bought the parts to build my first computer actually told me I should just go home and knit booties for my grandchildren. Funny thing is, a couple of years later he wanted to hire me to teach that new-fangled Visual Basic stuff in a little school he was starting next to his shop.

Just discovered this topic. Yes 5 years on! I have tried a few times to learn php and know the very basics ie. can make sense of some if I read through it although not capable of making my own really. I find the best way for me to learn is on my feet and as I build something i want. My fairly recent discovery of MODx has renewed my interest in learning php in order a) understand better what the snippets I use do exactly and b) to be able to tweak. LOL I’d love to say c) build my own snippets but I can’t see past my 8 week old boy and nealry three year old boy taking up most of my time and energy.

Can anybody point me in the direction of some nice tuts to integrate php learning with MODx snippets etc or suchlike?

I well know the feeling; I had three boys within 16 months of each other, and didn’t have much time for anything but diapers and dishes for the next several years. Of course, that was back when "paper" diapers were still not much used for anything except when traveling. I remember the time when I still had two in diapers and after a full morning of shopping we stopped somewhere for a last purchase, and on returning to the parking lot found my diaper bag had been stolen. Somebody was very, very disappointed.

It’s good to know it’s not just me overwhelmed with nappies and the like. Roll on the summer when i plan for the toddler to naked until he is potty trained!

Well.. It would be great if there are resources about using php5 and OOP, because all/most of the tutorials don’t include OOP

I don’t do OOP. I see no point in it in a web application. Just sucks up memory and processor resources to no particular purpose. It all ends up as "goto" code at the bare-metal level anyway; functions with proper argument/parameter handling serve more than adequately for code organization and reuse for me. But that’s only my opinion.
