Think this way:
//<?php
If (pingToServer>1000ms) { //theServer==problem
}
else { //theWebContent==problem;
If ((blankTemplate+blankContent)>1000ms) { //theMODx==problem
// check settings, clear cache
}
elseif ((blankTemplate+fullContent)>1000ms) { // theContent==problem
// check snippets & plugins one by one, invalid/recursive calls to include files
}
elseif ((fullTemplate+blankContent)>1000ms) { // theTemplate==problem
// check include & require calls in header or TVs one by one
}
elseif ((fullTemplate+fullContent)>1000ms) { // theHeaderCalls==problem
// check inline javascript/css scripts one by one
}
else // browser problems
}
Do you use
Firebug?
Edit:
Ow, one more thing, why don’t you use zenPHOTO for the gallery?
I think it can act as the subfolder, and better in handling photographs pages and related.

MODx is great, but knowing how to use it well makes it perfect!

Another thought:
You’re on a shared host at 1&1.
If your database server is NOT "localhost" it may also be possible that 1&1 runs MySQL on different machine with less power than specified for your shared hosting...

If your using the typical shared 1&1 service then I know the DB server is different than the web server which will add a delay to the load times. If you can I would move the site to another host to avoid the distribution present with 1&1, I know I moved a few sites and they ran better.
I am unsure if their VPS/Ded options use the same DB setup. I suspect they do so even if you do have a nicer box with them if you’ve gotta use their DB servers...
Just to finish this topic and to share my experiences with modx and high document count or many documents to be delivered with performance...
Found a solution for me. This satisfies not only me but my customer as well.
I used modx as a framework to manage all my content pages, built an own bunch of classes/objects that handle images, at this time around ~4000.
In peak times, there must be a rather "strong" script that handles many uploads as well as many downloads.
Not only the database has to act with performance, also PHP has to... SQL and routines in PHP have to be quite "well done" to handle a vast amount of accesses to the site.
If somebody may be interested topics such as these, don´t hesitate to contact me.
