Netbeans debugging... help! [solved]

Yes, but we’ve upped the game (a little) since the days of Amstrads, C64’s and VICs

A little progress...

I have the debugger running in NetBeans however it appears to completely ignore breakpoints making it effectively useless.

The only way to make it halt is to check "Stop at first line" in the Preferences. This is actually a pain as that requires you to go through every file during debugging.

I dismissed Eclipse PDT today. It’s an absolute memory drain and won’t even load the MODx project into its workspace.

If that is as good as it gets I’ll have two more options:

1. Have another look at PhpStorm
2. Go back to my echo and error_log statements

The last options feels like writing software on the wall of a cave using the furry end of a dead animals tail... >:(

Which xdebug helper extension do you use in Chrome? I use ’Xdebug helper’, you don’t seem to be triggering the debug session, this could be a setting here, like ide identifier or port for instance. I’ve been using Netbeans on both windows and linux boxes for years, with IE browsers Chrome and Firefox without any of these issues.

Thanks for the tip! To be honest I did not know about the requirement for a helper extension.

I have installed Xdebug Helper for Chrome as you suggested.

In the settings for the extension, I choose ’Other’ for IDE key as that allowed me to put in ’netbeans-xdebug’ as a value for the session key, which is the same as NetBeans has in its preferences. I’m not too sure whether that works as I don’t see that bug icon appearing in the address bar. Also the setting for the IDE key seems to pop back to its default setting.

A step closer, but not quite there yet.

The trick is to add your domains quite literally so: ’localhost:8888/modx’ and not ’http://localhost:8888/modx’. Then the icon appears and you can do some 21st century debugging!

My echo and error_log days are over....
