I got the tweet from JayGilmore about
Help saving MySQL.
Is MODx ready for
MariaDB for sometime?

I looked at the site, but didn’t get the point of MariaDB. Is is just a clone of MySQL with fewer bugs or is it a different architecture?
For what I read several months ago it is a clone or branch of
MySQL by the original developer of MySQL because he did not like
how SUN was developing and releasing versions of MySQL. So he
started from "scratch" with a new database which started being almost
identical to MySQL...
please feel free to correct me if I am wrong... I read this a while ago...

i don’t know about the other DBs except MySQL (ever tried using SLQlite long time ago), but do you think MODx can adapt the open database connection with PHP’s odbc?
I found an example
<?php
$conn=odbc_connect('northwind','','');
that shows MODx can ride on this PHP extension.

The problem is that the backend scripts (action and processor) are heavily hard-coded with the PHP mysql_ functions, including using MySQL specific syntax such as the JOIN syntax. These need to be reworked to use a DBAPI, then MODx would be completely portable.

No, this is what xPDO (based on PHP’s PDO) is for. Evolution is tied to MySQL (and should remain that way IMO); the Revolution project aims to abstract that dependency completely while allowing us (in the near future) to take advantage of drivers specific to a particular database engine. Using odbc is not the intention, nor should it be.
Regardless, I believe MariaDB is compatible with the mysql extension, but I could be wrong.

I was talking about Evolution. I still think those action and processor scripts should gradually be reworked to make them more amenable to manipulation (i.e. not in and out of HTML and PHP but all in PHP, the HTML in a variable like the documentObject), and to get off the raw mysql_ functions into the MODx dbapi.
