This is a new one on me. I am trying to install Evolution on my SME server (www.contribs.org) which I have done many times before with 0.9.6, but now I get the subject message. I can use the shell to see that they do indeed exist. Any ideas?

BTW, why is it that these files always have to involve the user entering the shell to change permissions? Why can’t the permissions just be set out of the box correctly?

    Thanks.

The required permissions vary depending on the server’s configuration. In some cases the wrong permissions will cause 500 server errors. And Windows servers are another story altogether.

Check your FTP program’s configuration. You should be able to set it to whatever permissions you want for files and folders; or to use the permissions they have on your local machine. I have mine set to upload files as 644 and directories as 755, which means that for servers running PHP as an Apache module as the Apache user I have to change some files and directories to the less secure 666 and 777. I avoid servers set up like that, and recommend the same to my clients. In any case, you should have as few files and directories world-writable as you can get away with. In the case of MODx, there are a few directories and files that the scripts have to be able to write to, such as the cache files.

I’m just wonder if this issue was ever resolved, as I have the same problem. The assets/cache and /assets/cahce/rss directories DO exist, but I’m going through the installation process and it’s marked as FAILED. I have set the permissions to 666, but i’m still getting this error. Any ideas as to how I could resolve it would be really appreciated.

I’m also getting the following errors, despite having made these files writable:

Checking if /assets/cache/siteCache.idx.php file is writable: FAILED!

Checking if /assets/cache/sitePublishing.idx.php file is writable: FAILED!

Again, any ideas would be appreciated.

        Many thanks

        Vicky

Just in case anyone else is suffering the same frustrations, by uninstalling the ’assets’ directory, and through trial and error, I realised that the /assets/cache and /assets/cache/rss directories need to be set to 777, rather than just 666, otherwise it throws up all the other errors I mentioned in my previous post. Hopefully this helps someone out if they have the same problem at all.
