I’m moving countries and changing jobs!
I’ve been a teacher for years and now I’m moving countries and giving up teaching.
I’ve built many websites over the years and even used MODx a few times. I’m very comfortable with html/css and now I’m starting with PHP. I’ve been studying and using PHP for about six months now, so I’m not expert, but I’m studying every day.
I’ve got a few ideas for some web applications and I’m in no hurry to build them. I am, however, uncertain if I should use something like Expression Enginge 2.0, MODx, or just do everything from scratch.
I’ve seem people discussing this a few times around the web and it seems like people like to "fight" (jajajaja) over which framework to use. I’ve been looking at things like MODx and Expression Engine and I think (keyword think) I would like to use one of these as a "base" for my web applications. It just seems that many web applications have the same basic needs and it makes sense to me to start off with one of these and then just modify things (add modules and snippets and all sorts of custom code).
Here are my questions for people using MODx:
1: Are MODx and EE2 kind of similar beasts? Would they be considered to be in the same family? ;-)
2: I see that EE 2.0 is built on CodeIgniter. They have some documentation about how to build modules with CodeIgniter. You can then add these modules to your EE installation and extend EE. Could the same be done with MODx? Is there a "set way" to extend it?
3: I am very interested in MODx, but I am just not "getting it" right now. I’ve read through some of the documentation for Revo and it seems very complicated. I’ve read through some of the documentation for CodeIgniter and EE and, while not a breeze, it makes sense. Is MODx more for advanced developers? Would a PHP noob be crazy to jump in with MODx development?
I’m really drawn to MODx. I don’t know why, but I want to love it! jajajajaj.... I really want to know, though. Is MODx more for the "pros"?
I’m in no hurry with my web applications, but I don’t want to start off the wrong path. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for listening (reading) my rambling!
