Maybe we can replicate it in the Jira, I’ll talk to some guys later.

Very nice. A good clear tutorial. smiley

One minor spelling error under Presumptions: "shell" should be "shall."

      Thanks for the contribution!

Excellent tutorial, I have been meaning to try this for a while and finally got around to it this evening.

The tutorial was very easy to follow and I had multi domains pointing to one MODx Revolution Beta 4 install working within 10/15 minutes.

          :)

Now i am considering porting my current MODx 1.0 sites to this new setup which will definitely make updating sites easier in the future.

          Thanks Aaron

            Hi,

I know this thread is getting on a bit now, but I have only just discovered the potential of managing multiple sites from the one Revo install. I might also be the only person having trouble with this, but hopefully someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

I am pretty sure that I have followed the process exactly as explained in the tutorial (thanks for sharing that - nice and clear and easy to follow). Having completed all the steps I’m not getting the desired result, instead ending up with the root dir listing.

It could be a stupid mistake, although if I had to guess it might well be my lack of understanding regarding the following:

This tutorial is based on the assumption that all domains that shall be served by this MODx Revolution installation are pointing to one and the same directory/the same document root on your web server, e.g. /var/www/localhost/htdocs or /var/www/localhost/modxrevomulti or a corresponding path on other operating systems.

I’m guessing this is an .htaccess job. Could anyone who has successfully implemented this maybe suggest how I might do this?

            Thanks,
            Dan

You need to create one or more virtual hosts -- all pointing to the MODx root directory. I know how to do that under XAMPP on localhost (Windows), but haven’t tried it on any other platforms.

For anyone who might be interested, this is fairly straightforward on cPanel. All you need to do is create an ’addon domain’ under the account where the MODx install is, and make sure the document root is ’public_html’ (if that’s where your MODx install is), as opposed to ’public_html/addondomain.com’, which I think cPanel has a tendency to set as standard unless you specify otherwise.

This is definitely a clean solution, but I’m currently trying to weigh up the pros and cons. If, for example, I needed to put up a non-MODx version of 1 of the sites, then I’d have to remove the addon domain and create a new cPanel account, as opposed to simply removing existing index.php etc and replacing with static site files (I think!).

Has anyone tried any of the other methods of running multiple sites from 1 install? In a way I think I would prefer separate cPanel accounts, and therefore separate FTP accounts with individual index.php files etc as per - http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/revolution/Using+One+Gateway+Plugin+to+Manage+Multiple+Domains - but it sounds like you need some pretty complex .htaccess action to accomplish this.

I think the gateway plugin method is actually a little simpler (though plugins scare some people). You just point both domains at the same MODx root directory and create the plugin. I don’t think any messing with .htaccess is required. You would have to undo some of the stuff you did before, of course, and you’d still want context settings for each site for things like site_start, default_template, site_url, and http_host.

I don’t see any good way of getting out of the problem of possibly wanting to convert one site to a non-MODx site (but who, in their right mind, would want to do that? wink wink wink) . In that case, I think I’d use two completely separate directories and two complete MODx installs.

                      Thanks again Bob.

Originally I was trying to decide if there was any benefit to having separate cPanel accounts, as opposed to having all extra domains tagged onto the 1 main account where MODx is installed. Those of you with more cPanel/Apache experience would already have known that that isn’t possible, but my host has just confirmed that for me.

Has anyone used any of the multisite setups for live clients’ sites? I would be very interested to hear your experiences.
