Hi I am new to MODx, so excuse the stupidity of this question if it is deemed as such.

When you set up a template and then insert the content tag, how do you control the width of the block of text that is outputted. Currently when I set the content tag within a page then when I go to view that page the body content is only about 400 px when I want it to fill the whole page.

How is the width controlled ?

The template contains the HTML code that establishes the layout. The CSS file the template links to in its <head> ... </head> section controls the styling. So how the content is displayed depends on the HTML container it’s in, and the CSS that styles it.
