I am very excited about Modx. I come from the Joomla world and couldn’t do everything I wanted to do with Joomla (Ajax being the main one).
So, as I read and learn I don’t see any distinction between a document template and the site template. Are they the same only assigned to
    different layers (spots?)?
Or am I missing the Site template options in the manager area?

    Thanks

Templates for the site are in Resources -> Manage Resources, and the Templates tab.

A template is the HTML that will form the container for your content. You can make one out of an ordinary HTML document. Just paste the HTML into a new template field, and you’ll see exactly what that page looks like anyway.

Then content areas are replace with MODx tags, mainly the [*content*] tag to replace the main content of the page with that from each document as it is requested. Dynamic content such as menus and blog-type lists are provided by snippets, which are the wrappers for php code in the page.

This method of "templating" does not restrict you in any way in regards to your site layout or function. The HTML layout and the styling are totally at your discretion.

You’ll also see the term "template" used for a number of snippets. This is basically the same thing, usually these are simply "chunks" with the HTML that is to be used repeatedly for certain parts of the snippet’s output, such as the links in a menu or the individual item summaries in a blog or news listing.

I see now - that explains it.
        Thanks very much.

I’m excited to be learning Modx and equally excited at the chance to help get the word out and push this exciting platform along.

Good tip for learning MODx when coming from other systems: forget every preconception of how things should be done and be prepared for multiple ways to do just about anything, even emulating how other systems work.
