I just made the mistake of buying a template from www.modx-templates.co.uk, which is part of template-help.com. They have some nice designs, however I was told after the sale that they do not sell any templates compatible with MODx. Interesting, given the site name. I have requested a refund - we’ll see how good their customer service is. The online chat rep was an a$$ so far...

Yes, I have seen a few sites selling MODx templates that turn out to be just html templates. The idea is that it is so easy to port it to MODx that ’everyone’ could do it. Template-help is template monster, they do not support MODx. The thing to do is to report the template reseller to them and see if they make them change the statements on the site.

I am curious, how one justifies a template is a Modx template? There are so many snippets and plugins one can use for a site, it’s impossible for anyone to use them all for Modx template.
I was thinking unless the plugins/snippets you bundled in the template are coded by you, you can’t rightfully make money out of it even you do the design and css/html

I’ve got a few templates on my loripsum.co.uk site that are set up with basic snippets and tags to produce the page you see in the demo, with manual install instructions, and everything properly packaged up to use the SkinGraft module for automatic installation. I suppose I would not feel uncomfortable about selling those (at least the ones I’ve developed myself), if I were in the template sales business.

Actually, if I were to sell templates, I would set them up to be drop-in replacement templates for the installation demo site, with different Wayfinder config files for different menu structures. The demo site has a few template variations, so it’s not difficult to see how it’s done. I suppose I should update loripsum to do that; originally I wrote the template switcher plugin just for such a site, but it causes problems in some circumstances.

The way the commercial template resellers should go is to sell the template AND provide the service to MODxify the template providing the installation and page structure. They should actually provide options for various CMS options inorder to make more money. The Template Monster crowd are not too big on providing services, in general it is just a side income with minimal effort and a long shot at that since there are several hundred thousand resellers selling the same templates.

I am happy to report that they have agreed to refund my purchase. I have to fax back a statement that I won’t violate their copyright by using it anyway. So at least there’s a good ending to this.
Thanks for the comments and explanations.
