    Hi all,

This is my first post, and I want start by giving fantastic kudos to the development team. My background is in MySQL/PHP application dev, so I can really appreciate the serious amount of work that has gone in to ModX. Also, I spent an exhaustive 8 weeks reviewing and exploring other CMS’s, and find this to be the most elegant and readily workable.

Now my problem... I just did my second test install of ModX, and the ModXHost templates are not showing up in the Resources pane of Manager, nor are they available when creating a new document. Instead, all I have is "Minimal Template" (the ’default’ one).

The first time I installed (using the same source files, but on a different server) I had access to at least one more template, and, if memory serves me (though it often doesn’t smiley), there were several documents in the ’MyModX Site’... not just the one that I see now.

I have spent a couple of hours reviewing the documentation, forums and verifying that my permissions and .htaccess file are correct. Only the default template exists in the modx_site_templates table. Also, the assets/templates/modxhost directory exists and has all the relevant files in it. As a ModX noob, I’m temporarily at a loss.

Any thoughts as to why this is, or was I just imagining there were more templates on my first install?

    Thanks,
    David Ocean

When installing, there is a checkbox option to install the "demo" site. It is at the top of the same page with a long list of chunks, modules, plugins and snippets to install. They are all checked by default, but the "demo site" installation is not checked by default, so it’s easy to miss it.

You can just re-upload the "install" folder and do an upgrade, checking the topmost box on that page this time.

Thanks Susan- I knew it had to be something simple like that. I just got done checking out the setup.data.sql and saw that there was provision in there for at least a total of four templates, so I must have missed something in the setup. Will do.

        Best,

I also am glad to find ModX,but like so many others, I missed that checkbox. The problem is that everyone who is new and unfamiliar to ModX would check it if they knew it was there . It should be checked by default and let people uncheck it if they don’t want it.

Why would anyone new to ModX not want to have that installed. If someone who is familiar with Modx does not want it they will know it is there and uncheck it...Or if some noodb doesn’t want it after it is installed they can do the update, but at least they will know what they will be missing. If you don’t check it in the first place you will think you got the whole deal and you will waste a lot of time :’( finding out you don’t have the really important stuff to a noob

What is the reasoning behind not adding it to the defualt install--if I might ask?

If you disagree with me could you at least put it in red or something so it stands out.Or maybe before the install starts have a pop up that says are you sure you do not want to install the demo site---It is a good Idea if this is your first ModX install?

          Like Susuan said

The installation/upgrade process is changing for 0.9.7 and will feature a new final step for installing various packages of data and/or files to help new adopters get up and running quickly. These packages might include choices of several different "demo sites", a set of related components (snippets, chunks, plugins), a specific template design with images and CSS files, etc.

As for the current releases, many of us who deploy a lot of sites and run a lot of upgrades decided to have this unchecked by default, because you can easily overwrite important data in your site if you don’t uncheck it when upgrading. But I agree new installs should probably have this checked by default.

Man!!!! That sounds good kiss. I think having something like that included would really put MODx in a class by itself--more than it is already, of course. I can’t imagine anything that would be more beneficial to the noob than to have a ready made documented site to toy with and take apart.

2 thumbs up on that idea.......
