    Hey Guys,

I work for a company here in canada named, Dyadem, we’re a software company focused in risk management software solutions, Im their head web-developer and I’m looking to integrate a CMS system to kind of "fix all our problems" solution haha. We’ve gone through several CMS solutions and have gotten it down to 3 competitors, MODx, SilverStripe, and DotCMS

Our main concern is that we’ll be able to do the following:

    - Modularity, being able to reuse snippets of code, PHP/HTML prefferd
    - User-System, we have several different types of users who have access to different types of resources/information and so a role or level based user system with a login and registration is required
    - We also are planning to implement a system that changes the information on a page and navigation based on what industry a viewer selects
    - Form creation/validation - we want to be able to create forms easily with custom validation if necessary
    - Workflow - this is key, our department has several different content people and developers as well, but we also need to have our manager or ceo give the final goahead to release a new update to live

So with those key features in mind, we’ve gone over the different CMS solutions, we know that dotcms has the capacity to do all above, and modx we believe can do all the above(enless someone has some experience with some of those features and modx) and were not sure about silverstripe, although from what we’ve gathered it should be able to do it too

Ouur issue is, we only have been able to talk to sales teams and they can generally just tell you exactly what you want to hear so that you go with them, we want to know if anyone has had personal experience working with any of the three systems and what their take on our list of required features is? From your experience is one better than another? is one buggy or resource-hungry that we should be cautious of?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

      Hi

I am the lead developer from Hive.net.au a certified Silver Stripe Partner (Thought I would get the disclosure done first, I am not a sales person). We spent months deciding on a CMS solution to provide to our clients, which at the end we came out with Silver Stripe. We had two main drivers that had to be meet.

      • The 1st was our most important - End User ease of use.
      • The 2nd was a need for rapid development to help create better efficiencies and margins for our business

I will explain why we picked Silver Stripe over other leading CMS solutions.

After spending much time with each application we found that the framework, “Sapphire”, which the Silver Stripe CMS is built on, was extremely powerful, allowing you to extend the CMS to your will in a short amount of time. The PHP is OO (available from PHP5) which makes our life even easier, although for people use to classic PHP it’s a little bit of learning curve if you have not used a OO language before. These two factors can allow you to build a simple and small managed website right through to a full on web application. The flexibility is amazing.

With many features out of the box and in add-on modules from the community there is much you can do without much programming. To allow for a simple end user experience Silver Stripe keeps the configuration and customisation at the programming level (although very easy with sapphire) and leaves just the simplified CMS editing features which through customisation can do some very sophisticated things. The reason for this is to allow the end user just to edit content and not have to be confront with an array of configuration and add-ons that they have no idea about and can become overwhelming.

The level of sophistication you can produce from silver stripe is amazing especially once you first use it seems very simple, this is the reason it is fast becoming a choice for many organisations as an enterprise CMS. Some examples include, http://www.demconvention.com http://thelowdown.co.nz http://californiawomen.org

The power of the programming architecture and light use of resources can be proven through the use of Silver Stripe on the http://www.demconvention.com serving over 2.6Billion hits by 3.2million visitors in just one week. http://silverstripe.com/2008-democratic-national-convention/

They are just some of the reasons we chose to base our business on just one CMS. As for your particular requests I have made the following comments to how Silver Stripe CMS can perform what you want.

Modularity, being able to reuse snippets of code, PHP/HTML prefferd
As Silver Stripe is based on Sapphire Framework which is PHP OO based is very easy to do this through classes and objects.

User-System, we have several different types of users who have access to different types of resources/information and so a role or level based user system with a login and registration is required
The current version of Silver Stripe allows for support for setting granular security permissions on pages. Users can be a member of one or more groups, and groups can be configured to have various system rights, and various view and edit permissions to a page by page basis. This provides a great deal of flexibility. The next release of Silver Stripe 2.4 (Currently in alpha) will allow for even more flexibility through user roles.

We also are planning to implement a system that changes the information on a page and navigation based on what industry a viewer selects
Like mentioned earlier Silver Stripe is based on the Sapphire framework and one of it features is being able to extend classes with ease, you could easily extend feature to archive what you are after by setting up a page type, look through the Silver Stripe tutorials. (or buy the official Silver Stripe Book)

Form creation/validation - we want to be able to create forms easily with custom validation if necessary
Silver Stripe has a module called UserForms this allows for the generation of complex forms including validation through the CMS it self, or if you require an even more complex form you can use sapphire to develop a form with validation. Validation is performed with JQuery so client side out of the box, great stuff.

Workflow - this is key, our department has several different content people and developers as well, but we also need to have our manager or ceo give the final go ahead to release a new update to live
The Current Workflow module for Silver Stripe allows you to achieve this with our much effort, however there is a new version of the Workflow module which has even more features to make the management of a workflow even easier.

Through the use of Silver Stripe I have become very passionate, because I strongly believe that this piece of software can do wonders for an organisation, the feedback we get from customers when we develop a Silver Stripe based site is always great, especially if they have come from another CMS, content editors cannot believe how easy we can make doing their job.

Well I hope this information has help it is by no means a sales pitch, I am just very passionate about Silver Stripe because I have seen it do amazing things. If you do decide on a Silver Stripe implementation and need assistance with it, we can help (it’s what we do) please email me if you need further assistance.

      Cheers
      Adam

P.S. If you do decide to go ahead with Silver Stripe I also recommend purchasing the Silver Stripe book (from Amazon), it covers everything I mentioned above in depth and simple to understand language.

Can SilverStripe change its back-end fields?
How about making a new admin panel of members database, with specific fields?
Can SilverStripe edit its css/php files from the back-end?
Can you create your new "reuse snippets of code, PHP/HTML preffered" on the fly?
Or do you have to upload everything with FTP?
How hard is it to bridge SilverStripe with other softwares, like Prestashop or OpenX or SMF or Jobberbase?
OMG, I have to change my template right now, and I far away from my development laptop!!! -> can I change it NOW? I mean REALLY NOW???

        I’m sure silverstripe is good.
It just doesn’t suit with my need.
        Thx for your offering, though.

Agree. Tried Silverstriep, and it’s a very promising CMS. But as for now, and probably in the the future as well, I’m still on MODx. There’s just no reason to change. smiley

            Hi Guys,

Not trying to preach to the converted, it would be the same as trying to convince me to use modx, not going to happen. Does not suit my needs. Sorry if I came off that way, everyone has different requirements was just answering the question that mmihok asked from my own experience, and I am little passionate like you guys.

@goldsky Silver Stripe CMS is MVC based, so extending the admin interface is very easy, to add a field to the back end whether it be a text field or an image upload field is only 2 lines of code.

As for extending the members database with specific fields, last time I did this took around 10 minutes. The reason for choosing Silver Stripe was rapid and agile development, pretty sure that is rapid.

The only thing I don’t understand is your question around new "reuse snippets of code, PHP/HTML preffered" on the fly, would love to see an example of this, maybe I am a little slow after all its the weekend.

Due to the philosophy that Silver Stripe built in to the CMS from the begging that is the back end of a CMS should be for content managers and not developers, out of the box you cannot edit template files from the back end. Although if you wanted to do this it would be easy to implement. If you were really in that kind of predicament most hosting providers have a place you can edit your files in their control panel. Removing this developer work to a lower level allows for the CMS to be simple and do what it meant to do edit content.

In regards to connecting external sources such as other software and data sources, the external content module can take care of that (http://silverstripe.org/external-content-module/) you can write your own connector or there is growing list of community developed connectors.

On the flip side Silver Stripes lack of easy to use online documentation is little bit of a let down but they are working on this and the just released Silver Stripe book answers most questions and is very well written.

As SilverStripe and MODx share the same position in the packtpub’s 2009 Open Source CMS Award, I’ve never underestimated the power of SS.
Well, there must be also a good reason why I should switch to SS for a client.
In the mean time, you should try MODx too, perhaps it’ll useful for your other needs. smiley

I have been using MODx for a fair while now, but recently using SS I am really glad I gave it a shot!

                  • Adding a backend field is as easy as:
                    $fields->addFieldToTab( ’Root.Content.Main’, new CalenderDateField(’Date’), ’Content’ );
Which adds a "Template variable" called "Date" above the "Content" field that contains a date-picker ( CalenderDateField, there are many other types ).
                  • Editing backend via FTP IMHO is far better than having all the logic saved to the DB. I like directly editing files than messing with textarea’s.
                  • "Chunks" are done via yourtheme/Includes/MyInclude.ss then including it in your template via <% include MyInclude %>. "Snippets" are done by extending the page class. Creating the class method "MySnippet" will create a placeholder $MySnippet.
                  • Installing it side-by-side with other software is as simple as MODx.
I found it to be just as comprehensive as MODx, except a lot more agile in terms of site development.

It does have a few cons compared with MODx however:

                  • It is younger software, meaning less pre-built modules
                  • To use efficiently it requires knowledge of PHP. In my opinion, this is what it makes it awesome as well. It feels more like a framework.

If you want to see the basic workflow of creating a SilverStripe site, take a look at their tutorial: http://doc.silverstripe.org/doku.php?id=tutorial:1-building-a-basic-site . Following along with a local SilverStripe installation gives a good indication whether or not you like the SilverStripe approach over the MODx approach.

The other issue is the overhead of using a full CMS to make applications; why not just use a pure framework? It’s going to be faster to develop, easier to maintain, and bespoke to your client’s needs. What if you want to use a different authentication scheme, or find that built in ORM is not optimised for your application’s needs?

I admit I like the silverstripe/sapphire, it’s just I don’t see the point anymore of using a CMS for anything but general content management when there are so many great frameworks out there.
