I am working on bringing over a site I built that has built a decent size community onto the modx platform.
The site offers much information about dvds which I have titles and details stored in a mysql db.

I’d like to take as much advantage of modx as possible. So I was wondering which way I should approach the this -
Since I will not be administering the data, and wanted to keep it really simple for the client, would it be more beneficial to create page after page of titles or build a form to enter data and query it in the front end?

Do I lose any versitilty or ability to use some of modx built-in snippets? Or are they really just the same thing done differently.

I am new to cms’s in general but pretty decent with php, so I am still trying to figure some basic concepts like TV’s. Any help on some fundamentals here would be great.
    Thanks

If you can handle php fine, I think that xpdo could be your new best friend.. It can take your db and provide a crud api for it in minutes.. See the xpdo forums..

One other way would be to create a module to handle your data, in www.sottwell.com you can see a tutorial on doing such thing.

I think that it would not be so good to turn the dvd’s on to documents.. although, if you would have them in documents, you could then easily list them through Ditto snippet and add commenting possibility to each DVD with Jot snippet etc.. How many items you have there, the current version of modx has trouble handling much over 5000 documents, but the next major version will fix that (0.9.7).

BTW: someone move this topic to appropriate place (general support)

I probably will have around 700 listings currently, and are adding items pretty regularly. While I won’t get to 5000 anytime soon, it is plausible to reach that.

having comments and building a community around these pages is one of the reasons to build the site using modx. I’ll check xpdo and the site you reccomend.
        Thanks
