    Nissais links seem very helpful!
If I hear that you’re looking for a layout ’like a newspaper, or magazine’ for a website some alarms ring. Screen is not print! The reading habits and therefor the texts you want to have on your (or your customers) website need to bee screen-optimized and NOT look or ’feel’ like a newspaper. It just won’t work as your own examples show:
The first (http://www.aldaily.com/) is just horrible. If the content has something to offer one might be willing to search through the page (or print it to find what his looking for) but most people would just click away (as I did). The other one is fine but not really a ’newspaper-like’ layout and of course could be easily implemented with MODx.

Although quiet old, Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox on ’How Users Read on the Web’ is still important to be considered.
