a week or so ago I hashed out a new template for http://www.scottydelicious.com using only one table and then CSS for positioning all the elements.  I design under Mac OS X, and everything looked perfect to me in all the browsers that I have available to do checks with, but quite a few people informed me that the navigation and content were askew (also, they were nice enough to post screen shots !! Thank You !!).

So... I redid my template using tables upon tables upon nested tables.  It displayed properly on all my browsers again, and I had two aquaintances view it in IE6 which also displayed correctly, but.....

The code was so dirty and cluster-fu---d that I couldn’t stand to look at it.  It made me cringe to open the template html file to edit anything.  It was a mile and a half long.

So...  (Again with the so.  What’s with this guy?) I decided to scrap the all tables idea, scrap combining tables for layout with CSS, and do a little googling for the right way to layout a page with CSS.  The result displays pretty good with all my Mac OS X and linux browsers, but how does it fair in IE6.  If you can tell me, I would love ya forever.  Screenshots are also cool AND appreciated!

BTW, I tried http://www.browsershots.org but the wait for IE6 screenshots said "greater than 24 hours" so it would not be done.  Crap... Thats the only browser I can’t check that I need to check!

    thanks MODx’ers

Nice and clean menu in my Win IE6. Good job! Scotty, could you share the menu code (snippet and css)? It would be great. Also gallery looks fine. Can you share it too?

I’ve noticed, that your mp3 player doesn’t sound on my PC huh

Thank you all for checking a MacHead’s site with IE6.  Even though I don’t like IE6, I have come to understand that as much as 93% of internet users do.  Again, thanks for the feedback and the screenshots.

@bugaev:  My CSS did not validate when I checked it this morning (10/20/2005).  I will clean up the code and post everything in a .zip file.  I feel t is always nice to start with clean code so I can have the satisfaction of muffing it up myself, and it is my wish to extend that courtesy to others...LOL!

Not necessarily; it’s just what comes on their computer and they don’t know any better. I mean, would AOL be as "popular" as it is if users knew any better???

to bugaev, and whoever else wants to use my template and CSS as a starting point.  I guess I would prefer if you don’t take my pirate logo for your own, but I am not going to be a dick about it if you REALLY want to use it.  otherwise, if you contact me, and I have free time I can swap out that image for your logo, or I could send you my original template image files, and you can change them and cut them up however you want.

This is a list of tools I used for this template

MacGIMP (GIMP for Mac OS X and x11): graphics.
BBEdit: XHTML, and generation of DOCTYPE headings

                    • What I would do with something like that, lacking Photoshop and being very weak in GIMP skills, would be to create a nice logo of suitable size and shape, make it a transparent .png, and put it in a web page overlaying your logo, so that the background shows but the logo part is covered by mine, then use a screen capture to create a new .jpg out of it.

Amazing what one can do with simple applications like Graphic Converter, SnapNDrag, and some creative HTML and CSS if one is motivated enough!

On the other hand, maybe I should spend more time working with GIMP.
