I’ve been doing some modification to the default template in order to get a wider page. Whether or not I’ve "done things right," the home page (www.okstructures.com) is displaying more or less like I’d envisioned it. But the other pages in the site (still in early development) are narrower overall, with a much wider side menu. I’m baffled.
If any of you masters take a look at the site, would you mind showing me my problem between your chuckles? smiley
    • If you can wait a few days, you’ll have a much better starting point from which to work. wink

At the moment, the dev team is pretty tied up in getting out the next release, and I think you’ll really like the work. Lots of tiny bug fixes and MUCH better default content. It should be out next week.

Hopefully someone else will be able to peek in for you... if you don’t make good headway by next Tuesday, please ping me again. smiley

Thanks for the heads-up - I’ll eagerly await the next release. smiley
        • If I may poke my nose in, you really need a totally different template. I would recommend a single-column, with the menu across the top. Take a look at the samples on http://www.alandaniel.co.uk; click on the top images to switch the stylesheet. It’s all in the CSS; all five samples use exactly the same template!

Thanks, sottwell. The friend I’m doing this for specifically wants a side menu, though. Any particular advantages to putting the menu on top?
I’d love to put CSS to work on this site; for now, I think I’ll stick with a newbie-friendly pre-built template, since it’s hard to learn design and code at the same time. I’ve got a one-track mind. smiley
rthrash - any updates on the new release?
            • working hard and getting close. smiley

Cool. I won’t bother you, then. smiley
                • Check the templates on http://www.sottwell.com, and http://www.alandaniel.co.uk (click the images on the top to change the style). I’ll be happy to help you with any of them. Sunset isn’t quite finished yet, I want to round off the corners and a few other tweaks.

I’ve taken the liberty to do a serious cleanup of the html file. The changes are numerous and too many to point out. Various xhtml errors have been corrected to make it validate. Do a close examination and compare to your present code. Remember that it’s preferable to style the text in the stylesheet and not in the content. Also set the width of the page and its content in the stylesheet (see the classes w22, mainTable and content).

The trouble you had with differing widths was due to forcing the page to be wider by adding excessive hspace values to the images. This broke the design on the home page, but not on the second page which had the intended width as set in the stylesheet.

Note that the paths to images and stylesheet are changed here and need to be changed back to the correct values.

                    Hope this helps.
