Browser Unauthorized Prompt fires before MODx can deal with page

System:

IIS 6.0.
ISAPI component to re-write urls

Problem: When I add a page to a Document group to password protect it, rather than re-direct the user to a login page, the browser is throwing up a username and password prompt which is ending in a 401.5 error.

Do you have friendly URL’s enabled? If so, MODx uses the IIS 401 mechanism to attempt to rewrite the URLs. I imagine this is messing something up in your configuration, but I do not have (and will not install) IIS to mess around with here so I’ll let the IIS experts jump in.

Yes friendly urls are enabled. The way the isapi component works is it just simulates what Mod Rewrite does on a unix box.
How does MODx use the 401 mechanism? This is a new problem, and I have an older version of MODx on the same server that is working correctly....this is what leads me to believe that its 9.6 that is perhaps doing things a little differently?
