I seem to be getting execution timeouts when I run MODx sometimes (though not all the time, and I can’t tie it to a particular action).
Here’s a copy of the individual errors that sometimes come up:
[12-Mar-2008 14:00:15] PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in \\msa\link\saWebfiles\ext\sites\admissions\manager\includes\lang\english.inc.php on line 12
[12-Mar-2008 14:00:15] PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in \\msa\link\saWebfiles\ext\sites\admissions\manager\includes\config.inc.php on line 69
[12-Mar-2008 13:52:05] PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in \\msa\link\saWebfiles\ext\sites\admissions\assets\cache\siteCache.idx.php on line 2
[12-Mar-2008 13:38:35] PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in \\msa\link\saWebfiles\ext\sites\admissions\manager\includes\user_settings.inc.php on line 2
[12-Mar-2008 11:28:15] PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in \\msa\link\saWebfiles\ext\sites\admissions\manager\frames\menu.php on line 2
After looking at each of those lines, here’s what’s going on in the code:
config.inc.php:
session_start();
$cookieExpiration= 0;
english.inc.php:
sets a value for $_lang["about_msg"]
siteCache.idx.php:
$c=&$this->config;
user_settings.inc.php
if (IN_MANAGER_MODE != "true") die("...");
menu.php:
if (IN_MANAGER_MODE != "true") die("...");
I’m running MODx on a pair of load balanced Windows 2003 servers (IIS with ISAPI_Rewrite Pro) and storing all my data (including session data) in shares on our SAN.
I’ve already tried overwriting all the files from a working install. Since my development environment (apache on localhost) works fine from the same database, I assume the files are not corrupt, and the database works fine.
Any ideas?

Have you tried creating a phpinfo(); test file on the server to see if that loads ok?
Ive just looked at your site and got a modx error the timings look rather slow:
PHP: 24.0842 s s
Aaron
The site I am referring to is on an internal network at the moment, so I assume you are looking at my personal site. The slow times on my personal page are only due to shared hosting problems--totally unrelated.
I created a php info file, and it will not respond either when the site goes down.
I’m still having the problem, but I figured out what action can reproduce it every time. After I save a page, I get the following error:
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in \\msa\link\saWebfiles\ext\sites\admissions\assets\cache\siteCache.idx.php on line 2
I’ve tried removing the "clear cache" option, and the same thing happens.
Any ideas?

Sounds like you’ve got an enormous (or possibly corrupted) site cache. Take a look at it and see what’s taking up so much space (if that is indeed the issue). One problem can be lots of snippet code in the database; the solution is to break out most of the snippet’s code to an external file, and just include() the file in the Manager’s snippet code.
