No, in my last post I was referring to my hosting company, entic. I don’t know anything at all about TMDHosting, except for a quick glance at their "MODx Experts" page.  rolleyes

I’m usually around for questions and basic help; whether I’m free for any development work is another matter that can only be resolved at the time. I’m semi-retired, and don’t take on more than I can comfortably handle.

MODx comes with TinyMCE for editing documents. Templates, chunks, etc are just textareas, although I think you can use a plugin to get chunks to use Tiny as well.

You should get an ftp client for yourself, are you Windows, Mac, or otherwise?

Does entic preinstall MODx? Is entic experienced with MODx?

Is FCKeditor the html editor you’d recommend? Do I have to have an html editor?

      Thanks for your help, Susan.

You should have two things on your computer, an ftp client and an editor, preferably one that has syntax color coding and line numbers. The ftp client should have the capability of automatically downloading a file into your editor, and saving the results back to the server. I can help if you’re a Mac user; it’s been too many years since I’ve used Windows and I don’t know what’s available free for Windows any more.

If you already have MODx installed, you have TinyMCE installed for editing documents in your browser. FCKEditor is not for stand-alone editing, like TinyMCE it’s for plugging in to another program for adding a Rich Text editor to a form’s textareas. We used to use FCK, but switched to Tiny some time ago.

Then Tiny is the one I’ll use too. Thanks for saving me agony. My FTP client will be SmartFtp, which I used before.

Then you should be in business  laugh

If you use Firefox, there is an extension call "It’s All Text!" that lets you use your preferred text editor for any plain textarea field, such as for templates. I use it all the time.

Hosting a a hard issue for even the old savy web dog. If you are not a tech and want a host that really understands MODx and don’t care about stuff like if you are on a windows server. I would check out http://www.onesmarthost.co.uk/modx-hosting-offer.html it is maintained by forum user awardle who is an active forum member (and really knows how to install and setup MODx on a windows server).

A while back he/she posted this offer for 1 year free MODx hosting, not sure if it is still valid. I would feel confident regarding their MODx skills: http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,24478.0.html

I cant vouch for them since I have not hosted with them.

I’ve had MODx sites up on relatively inexpensive shared servers (< $10/mo.) for quite some time at both bluehost.com and lunarpages.com with no issues. I’ve never had to contact them about anything since their default setup is quite compatible with MODx.

The only advice I have is to make sure you’re on a *nix server with PHP5 before installing MODx. Windows servers don’t always play well with MODx. As for the PHP5, It’s not necessary, but you’ll get better performance (and usually a newer server).

I can vouch for onesmarthost, I have a very high traffic site with him, no problems at all.
I think he undersells his servers compared to most hosts!
Aaron is very knowledgeable and helpful for MODx web hosting.
Slight downside is he uses Windows IIS, but he has ISAPI Rewrite 3 installed so you can use .htaccess.

I know I’m just a really small time customer for TMDHosting.com. I’m sure they’ve got way more expensive and more important accounts, so I really appreciate that much more the responses, changes, solutions they’ve provided. smiley

Although they took off a copy of basically this same post from their feedback forum, they’ve moved my account to a production server, have involved admin support and THE cPanel admin too. I notice a marked improvement in how fast cPanel loads now. Their servers are located in Houston, TX, and the techs are located in FL as if that matters.

I’m more happy than not with TMDHosting.com at this point, I suppose. I am proceding with fear and trepidation somewhat as I get into less off-the-shelf kind of stuff with this bada55 MODx!

                    :-)

That’s excellent! Anybody can not know something; it’s how they respond to their not knowing being exposed and corrected that separates the men from the boys! Good luck, and we’re always here to help when needed!
