I’ve got a new VPS that is very lightly managed (but it’s cheap!), so I’m scraping the rust off of my admin skills. It’s Solaris, too, which is making things even more fun. And of course I’ve got a problem already.

I tweaked the php.ini file to get rid of safe_mode, turn off magic_quotes, and allow url fopen among other things. Apparently I tweaked it a bit too hard, because now, trying to install a new MODx (latest taken from svn yesterday) it isn’t getting past the license page; just keeps reloading the license page. I did a quick check on my local MAMP server and it works fine, so I know it’s my setup. I’m presuming it’s the php configuration doing something to the POST so the installer script isn’t able to deal with it.

I don’t think it’s an issue with any file corruption; I used scp to upload a zipped archive and unzipped it in place. Love ssh! What normally takes at least an hour to upload via FTP only takes about 5 minutes to upload, move, and unzip in place via scp/ssh.

Does anybody see anything obviously wrong here?

Ok, other than the Apache mod_suexec not working (I’m contacting their support, which so far has been very good; not quite as good perhaps as my previous host, but then they cost eight times as much...), I’ve installed MODx with no further problems. On to moving my sites!

A note of interest, I ran across these people while doing some idle research on the LDAP question. It seems that they are running the FreeLDAP service, so I thought I’d give them a try. Certainly the price ($15 a month) is worth a little play work on my part grin And of course the package comes with free access to the LDAP server! So maybe once I get everything under control, I’ll see what I can do about that cool

Beware APC! All of my site-wide variables [(site_name)] etc were not changing! The database was fine, the siteCache.idx.php file was fine, both showed any changes, but the values being output weren’t changing!

I turned the apc off in the php.ini file, restarted Apache, and now all is well.

          [later...]
Ok, it turns out apc has a configuration setting, apc_stat, to cause it to check if the file has been changed. This was set to 0 in my php.ini, so it may well work just fine with that set to 1. I’ve got limits on this VPS for memory resources, however, and since this uses a memory caching scheme, I’m going to pass on it for now.
