I originally posted to another forum on this board because I’d reached the end of my tether in trying to get a simple Ditto, NewsPublisher and Jot set up running. I had weird Internal 500 server errors, blank pages ... one day it would work then the next day it wouldn’t.

Well where I’m at now is, since modx installed so well on my Mac and I had no errors with any snippets/chunks or anything, and because these errors all came from out of the blue on the live server (even though I hadn’t changed anything on that domain or it’s modx) I began to wonder if my Hosting (GoDaddy) had anything to do with it ... especially after reading some of the topics here.

I’ve just installed on a new server (borrowed some space), it all went as it says it should on the packet, I’ve got Newspublisher, Ditto and Jot waltzing between the sunflowers singing happy ... dittos. smiley There’s no errors, no problems, no stress ... and no countless hours of wasted time.

I’ve literally spent the last month trying to get modx to work at GoDaddy and run into nothing but trouble from day one. I put it down to n00bieness but when I made that first post above, I couldn’t fathom how the same code on 2 servers could give such drastically different results. It might be early days on this different server, but after reading peoples feedback about the oddities of Godaddy hosting I’ve really gotta say that after all the trials and errors of the last month I have way more faith in Modx than I do in GoDaddy! kiss

I had a few different sites on the same Hosting account with GoDaddy, 2 of those sites had Modx and neither installation would work as it was meant to, both returned different errors at different times. The primary site had a Internal Error showing in Safari activity window since day one - the pages would load (until the end), the other site showed no errors until the end. Both had the the same snippet/chunks/TV’s etc and I had the exact same set up working on my Mac.

There was a php.ini in the root directory which had register_globals set to off - and phpInfo in the managers panel show register_globals as being off.

I never got the chance to try the suggestion made http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,23997.0.html"" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">here to place a php.ini in different directories. I’ve already spent so much time on trying to get this to work already I no longer have the time to risk it failing again so I’ll be shifting host tonight - hopefully.

So no, there’s no way I could recommend GoDaddy for Modx. It’s just been a huge headache for me and looking around here, I can see that others have had similar problems.

Register_globals being "on" is not necessarily the end of the world. It can be a security problem, but properly written code avoids that. On the other hand, it can be a security problem, and there is no need for it (other than developer laziness) so any hosting provider that insists on keeping it "on" should be regarded with deep suspicion. They claim it’s needed since their customers will complain when their apps break. And what about their customers who get hacked because some idiot being hosted on the same server provides an attack vector through their badly coded application that requires it to be "on"?

You see, that’s my problem with any server that provides PHP with register_globals "on". If somebody is able to hack into clueless.com, it’s entirely possible they can gain access to the entire server and do nasty things to my site as well. So even turning it "off" in a localized php.ini file would leave me feeling very insecure. (ladies will know what I mean, if they’ve ever left the lady’s room and felt a draft across the back of their legs that lets them know their skirt got caught up in the back...)

Anyway, we can vote with our (virtual) feet, and leave these idiots to their insecure servers.

as far as shared hosting solutions go, we have good experiences with hostmonster.com
If you’re serving to europeans you might consider another solution as the hopcount gets quiet high, but for US serving it seems very powerfull.

GoDaddy is too bloated and their interface is too busy for me... I’ve been really happy with Bluehost.
