I have a low traffic site, and decent upload, so I have always hosted from home. We had a power outage that exceeded the UPS cycle time and the server (Gentoo Linux) is trashed. I was able to boot a live cd and mount the drive.

I have never seen a disk so screwed up sad I had backups scheduled and the disk holding the backup was also severely corrupted. Reinstalling the server is not really a problem, I usually find it fun, but I can not find any trace of the mySQL directories or the databases. Does anyone know where these should be on a Gentoo system and an extension if any? I searched google and have found nothing but conflicting results. Either way, I cannot locate any of the directories mentioned.

I immediately made an image of the server drive and proceeded with fsck, that made it even worse, since I have the image I still have hope, but it is dim. No /root, /etc, /usr is half gone. I have about 60,000 items in lost&found, mostly named by inode - that blew me away, the drive only had about 5.5gb of stuff on it.

The bulk of my non-website data is on a raid5, with a battery on the controller itself so nothing happened to that one, even my wife’s computer with a raid0 was untouched.

Google has an excellent cache of the site and I still have the www directory fully intact, but of course, the magic lies in the database. I’m not really worried about downtime for the moment, we are easy to find smiley

Any words, advice, suggestions, and slams welcome. I’ll see what you all say before I start rebuilding the server and the website.

    Thanks

Thought I’d move this over to hosting experiences since it seems really relevant. Good luck on the recovery!

Sorry to hear about the crash that really, really sucks. I’ve lived through a few of those and I feel your pain.

The bad news is that if you’ve already fsck’ed the drive, the damage is done and there’s no going back. You may try something like this and see if helps though: http://crashrecovery.org/

I am not a Gentoo guy so I don’t know specifically where it kept DB files, but generally mysql stuff is in /var/lib. What packaging system does Gentoo use? You could query the package listings for mysql and see where everything is installed.

          Good luck!

Thanks for the link, but it just looks like GUI for the uninformed smiley I’m going to keep my bunk image on the backup drive and take the original SCSI disk offline and remake the system on an IDE drive for now. I will hold off on the website until I hear back from Stellar - http://www.stellarinfo.com/linux-data-recovery.htm I doubt there product can help either.

            Thanks!
