I also have a dedicated server, but I don’t rent space on it because it’s not my job and I am by no means qualified to administrate a *nix server. I even hired a pro to administrate my dedicated server, contrary to what people think, it’s a full skillset to run a server.

Of course things like Plesk make you think that’s easy, but it’s not. I am not saying you’re not qualified (I don’t know that), but I sure hope you know what you’re doing tongue

Personnally, I wouldn’t host even a personnal website anywhere but on a server admined by a duly licensed pro, with money back guaranteed in case of trouble and well defined terms of use.

BTW, I have heard a lot of good things too about MediaTemple and DreamHost.

My day job is a server admin... But I take your point.
The server is looked after by the largest data centre in the UK and me so it’s in good hands

I guess I’ve been looking at the wrong sites then, I’ve only been hearing bad things about them in the past time (not to mention the sites like dreamhost-sucks.com), mainly complains about of people being removed from their server because of high data usage (what they pay fore), sounds a bit like overselling to me, sadly.

Right now I’ve got one semi big website hosted on a managed dedicated server (well, unmanaged actually, but a close friend of mine takes care of the server part) and a small personal website/tryout page that is hosted at WebXtra, a small Dutch webhost that offers nice service (as far as I’ve experienced) for a pretty reasonable price, a dedicated server would be an overkill for it wink

*NOTE - I no longer recommend Servage due to several reason - PM if interested.*

I used to have web hosting with 1and1 for about a year.

It was my first real hosting company (used to use homestead) so I didn’t know much, but they were big and had a reasonable price tag. Durring my time using them they had good service, loads of features.

Their support wasn’t nearly as good as I would have liked so I moved on.

I found two choices that fit my requirements
              <10.00 a month
              Unlimited MySQL databases
              More space than existing plan
              More bandwidth than existing plan
              And other stuff.

I narrowed it down to two companies that had decent reviews and all:
              Dreamhost
              Servage

In the end I went with Servage as they had a decent price (7.50/mo), loads of space, and features.

For any who recall my risk/benefit post a several posts back... I’ll just say that I’ve been pretty disappointed with Dreamhost. They’ve had some serious power supply issues in their building, for which there is little evidence of a permanent fix. It wasn’t their "fault", and while their features are super and their capacities unbelievable, I simply couldn’t swallow the unreliability. (And the speed wasn’t impressive either.)

So I’m leaning heavily on my 1&1 account, which I’ve had for years. I don’t ever recall having issues. Speed is fine. Reliability is good. Capacity, while not obscenely large, is certainly large enough for any of my purposes now or in the forecasted future.

Of course I prepaid (and broke even with) my Dreamhost account so I’ll be able to watch it over the next year and a half to watch for other issues and hopefully improvements.
                  Standard Disclaimer
                  I could be totally wrong.

Mosso was talked about earlier in this thread. I have a friend who tried them and this is what she just wrote me:

Well, Mosso is only good so far as it goes. There’s nothing good for stats - some wonked version of *ugh* webalizer. There’s a problem with setting up many databases, because of the way Mosso’s "cluster setup" works (or doesn’t....) Yes, their support staff is EXTREMELY a class act - but if they can’t give you the answers because the technology isn’t there....

AND it turns out they’re really more focused on windows servers (which is the DEFAULT for chrissakes!) So I’ve asked for a refund, and I’ll just have to do something different

So those who are more Linux oriented (I imagine most of us here) should probably steer clear of Mosso until they integrate better. Thought y’all should know.

Mosso now handles SSL. That was a show-stopper for me a few months back when they didn’t have it. I’ve signed up and will let you know how well it goes.
