Ok here is my problem, as well as being a noob to modx, i am also a nood to SEO. The issue is that i can’t find my website through any search engine and i have submitted the url to all the major ones.

For google and yahoo i even put the bit of hmtl code which goes in the head section to allow them to find the site. It was successfully found but when i search specifically for the site it doesn’t show up.

I am still developing the site but i would like it to at least appear in good when search for it.

Does anyone one have an idea of where i could be going wrong? Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    • Search engines use a number of different ways of placing results. Submitting your URL doesn’t really do all that much.

Do a Google search on SEO, and read a few articles like this one.

The bottom line is, have your preferred search terms prominent in your template’s <title> tag, as well as in an H1 element on your home page, and in the first paragraph of your content.

It won’t hurt to have your URL in the "signature" of your profile, and participate regularly in forums relevant to your site’s subject.

Proper structure (using H tags appropriately as in an outline, not too much junk before your main content) and clear, informative content is the single most important part of SEO. All the other "tricks" have been beaten to death by search engine spammers, and are mostly ignored by the search engines now.

      • Just as an example, I’ve had my site for several years, yet some family members were looking for me and couldn’t find me through a Google search. So I put a few of these suggestions in practice on my site, and within a matter of a couple of days my site became the first in line when searching on my name, and it still is nearly two years later.

          • HI

Some would still advice to submit sitemap to SE like Google as SE likes to know your site and maybe will store some pages when knows that they exist

            Cheers

              Hi There,
As Susan suggests, it’s best to include the terms you would like to appear for in the <title> tag of the site, and make sure each page is unique (I use the pagetitle for each page of my site) bear in mind though that this tag should be less than 100 characters including spaces.

Include these terms in H1 / H2 and then mention them naturally in the text of the index page (you want to aim for 2-4 mentions in around 500-600 words of text)

Apart from the above it’s a good idea to setup Google webmaster tools, submit your site and add an XML sitemap. You can use modx to create an XML sitemap that updates automatically using ditto.

All being well your site should appear for it’s domain name at the very least, but for search terms that are in any way competitive you need to get plenty of links to your site.

Hope that helps, if you let me know the URL of the site I will have a look to make sure there are no obvious barriers to SEO there.
