    After having developed a new site to replace an existing site, I’m trying to get my redirects working without much success. All are ending up at the 404 page. I’ve read through numerous postings on this subject but haven’t nailed this down yet.

    I’m using modx 1.0.0 with friendly urls enables.

    I initially tried this positioned above the friendly url section in the htaccess file:
    Redirect 301 /dkpublishing.html http://www.dklex.com/publishing.html

    This resulted in 404. I also saw a post that says combining rewrite rules with redirects is not a good idea? So how do we approach this?

    After reading a few more posts, I found this approach.

    RewriteRule ^dkpublishing.html publishing.html

    While this does display the new page, it still has the original url. It isn’t changed in the address bar. So how does this affect SEO. Is this really the same as 301?

    What is the right way to do this?

    Thank you!

      RewriteRule ^dkpublishing.html$ publishing.html [NC,R=301]

      Is what I normally use.
      From my very limited understanding of the .htaccess magic :
      $ - denotes the end of the url to re-write.
      NC - should make it Non Case sensitive, though it doesn’t on my server.
      R=301 - Permanently moved.
