So, I asked this same question to the CakePHP community without response... I’ve always been interested in modx, but I’m not entirely sure what it’s (realistically) capable of.

I recognize that I’m not experienced in Modx... but I’m a hardcore crash-course personality... so all I need to know is if this is a project that you would consider plausible on this platform.

The site would require the following:

    - Forums
    - User Blogs
    - Profiles (complete with Private messages, ratings, and account ratings)
    - Pet/Character profiles. In essence, a second profile that’s still controlled by the parent account
    - Auction system with transaction feedback (I may just try to integrate with - eBay somehow)
    - Google Maps integration (the site is geographically oriented. User location is very important)
    - System email alerts (new messages, etc) and bulk mailing capability.

The reason for the multi-tier profiles, is that this is a doll site. So we want users to be able to create profiles for their dolls.

Any thoughts, warnings, encouragements, or suggestions to use a different technology??

There are other platforms that handle blogs and forums better then MODx does out of the box, but it sounds like you’re aiming for a very complex and very customized site. I don’t think any other platform would allow you to integrate all that as easily as MODx would.

I’ve been using MODx for a few years, but just for simple sites. Now, just like you, I’ve got a crazy project I’m ready to attack. I’ve been going back and forth between using CakePHP and MODx. I’m far, far, far from an expert programmer...but I’ve always wanted to learn to program, so I figure there’s no better way to do it than with a big ol’ project. I’m leaning towards MODx, but I’m not going to make my final decision until I finish going through some more CakePHP tutorials like the ones you can find here: http://phpvideotutorials.com/.

From what people have been saying, it sounds like MODx Revolution should be up to the task for almost any project...it’s just that I’m having some trouble wrapping my head around the development process in MODx.

Well, if we both settle on MODx, I’ll see you again in the forums.

        Cheers!

Thanks for your feedback... it’s a tough decision to be sure! But hummm... modx sure seems appealing for it’s modularity. It could save me a lot of dev time vs. developing this site on Cakephp.

I understand that modx can’t do everything out of the box... but neither can CakePHP. I just need to settle on a platform that will provide me the

Good god shocked ... you sound like my clone. I’m doing the same exact thing. I’ve been going through the php vids and I’m starting to learn the basics of Cake before I make a decision.
