help installing modx revolution 2.0.8

I am trying to get modx installed on a linux machine (fedora core 13).

I have php timzone set. Every time I do setup I get the following:

FATAL ERROR: MODx Setup cannot continue.

Make sure your PHP session configuration is valid and working.

I can not find anything wrong with my php.ini file. I have the directory permissions set to what the documentation says.

does anybody have any idea what I need to do?
